The Mountain- Big or otherwise

Our local ski hill is fondly referred to by locals at The Mountain or Big Mountain, or The Hill. “I’m running up to do a few runs on the hill. ” Wanna climb Big Mountain this afternoon?”

But corporate entities bought Big Mountain and decided the name caused confusion with Big Sky, so it was rebranded as Whitefish Mountain. Whatever you call it, there’s a lot to do up there.

Have fun! Montana is the best. But, shhh!, don’t tell anyone…

  2. Going to a meeting at Grouse Mountain Lodge in June.. (then 3 days at Many Glacier).
Do you like this lodge? I don’t have to stay there if it is subpar…
And afternoons will be free to go exploring, do activities etc. Also what do you think about the adventure park ( I think it’s by Whitefish Lodge)? Good for adults or mainly for kids/families? I will be a solo female Traveler

    1. Meggen Wilson says:

Hi Kerry, Grouse Mountain is fine. It’s a solid three-star hotel. The food is just okay- but very Montana feeling. The Firebrand and the Lodge on Whitefish Lake are better- ( great views of the lake) although I personally haven’t stayed there- ( I have family who has stayed at the lodge and loved it) but we do eat at the Lodge quite a bit. My in laws stayed at Grouse Mountain last year and said it was very nice. The Adventure Park? That is way out near West Glacier Lodge. If you mean the park with the maze and “Fun Center”. It’s spot for kids and families. As a female solo traveler, I think you’d enjoy shopping in downtown Whitefish, a trail ride at the Bar W or Clydesdale Outpost, hiking up Whitefish mountain or perhaps doing a hike in the Many Glacier Complex although- try and pair up with a group. Hiking alone in Glacier is never a good idea. Many Glacier is spectacular- you might enjoy taking a canoe out on the lake or take the boat tour or go horseback riding- all available at the Lodge. On my website I have several posts about hiking and traveling in Glacier National Park. Have fun and please DM my Instagram if you have more questions. Fastest way to get me to answer. I’ve lived here over 22 years so I can answer pretty much anything.
